Everyone in our business knows that the radio business has changed. In fact, that “change” dominates the landscape of conversation even though the actual larger changes have been developing now over 15 years. Here are the real 2014 employment questions:
• Do you still have a passion for what you are doing in 2014?
• Are you enjoying what you are doing?
• Are you making a good living doing the work of your life?
If the answers to these questions are yes, you are fortunate. You should celebrate and focus on those things you are most grateful for today, including working on the team where you work and for the company paying your income.
If the answers to the questions are no, you have some real work to do in terms of reshaping your attitudes and opportunities for 2014.
Can you repair your enjoyment by firing up your creativity and use of a variety of tools to help your local social media, ratings, and revenue teams? Take a significant look at your local operation and see if you can find a way to change your value and get passion back as you significantly up your commitment to getting back to the joy of this business.
Ask yourself what you loved about radio and how that has changed, but also be willing to look through the eyes of a businessperson to find the spaces in the local business where you can make a more significant contribution and commit to growing your value.
Perhaps it is a rededication to your on-air work, your sales effort, your learning of social media (or, if you are in programming, learning sales and digital).
No company owes you a living and no operator cares about your career more than their bottom line. Why would they? So, 2014 is all up to you. You have the power to decide what you want to do this year, you have the faith in your skills, the correctness of your position. If you don’t, you should get out and do something different where you can stoke your passions.
If this is what you are meant to do, don’t let anyone take ground from you. Go get this business. It is one of connectivity. The more it changes, the more you will want to increase your value and knowledge base. But you are working for you. Invest in you. Protect you. Push your buttons and your passions.
Are you changing to revalue yourself on the local team? You can increase your value and it is always a good idea. At the same time, you can train yourself for a better, bigger future. Managers notice employees who are on the move. Now is the time to focus on growing your current, and especially future, value. After all, work is work, but it is important. The more passion you have for what you are doing, the more fun it will be. There is no accountant that can change that.
